“Law exists for humans, not the other way around.”
That progressive maxim from the late Prof. Satjipto Rahardjo has guided Aga Kristiana Silaen throughout her decade-long career. Today, the Senior Associate at Anggraeni & Partners is recognised not just for technical mastery and meticulous work, but for the spark she brings to every professional responsibility—an inspiration in Indonesia’s fast-moving legal landscape.
For Aga, success in litigation is measured less by courtroom victories than by whether the entire team levels up and wins together. Open, continuous communication, she says, is non-negotiable.
Starting as a generalist-specialist allowed her to cultivate both litigation and advisory skills. In the past two years she has focused on environmental and energy law while nurturing a growing interest in technology law. She applauds the e-court system for streamlining proceedings, though she hopes to see equal capability across courts from Sabang to Merauke.
Being a lawyer here is both fascinating and demanding: sharp technical acumen must be matched by adaptability and situational awareness. Litigation has enabled Aga to engage with experts across multiple disciplines, broadening her perspective far beyond pure law.
Law was not her childhood dream. A love of news and a string of high-school debate wins nudged her toward legal studies, where she found her calling. A Batak woman fluent in Hokkien yet inspired by the Javanese philosophy Urip Iku Urup—“life must shine”—Aga lives that credo through service, volunteering with Sahabat Anak and once chairing a National Children’s Day quiz programme.
“Plant your feet firmly on the battlefield, but keep your embrace warm for your fellow humans. In court, be bold—law demands decisiveness. At home, stay nurturing. A woman’s strength lies not only in sharp logic but in a heart able to embrace.”
Law will keep evolving, she emphasises, and women will always have room to shine—provided they remain sensitive, adaptive, and radiant.
Setyawati Fitrianggraeni, Managing Partner of Anggraeni & Partners, summarises it best:
“Aga is not just technically strong—she radiates a spirit that inspires others in our dynamic legal world.”
