On July 17, 2024, the Masyarakat Ketenagalistrikan Indonesia successfully launched the Electricity CONNECT 2024 and held a workshop themed “Enhancing Renewables Utilization and Smart Grid Implementation for VRE Strengthening to Achieve NZE 2060.” The event, held at the Nusantara Room, The Dharmawangsa Jakarta, was attended by key stakeholders and experts in the energy sector. Representing the Energy Working Group, Marcel Raharja, S.H., an Associate specializing in advisory and corporate transaction, trade law, corporate law, contract law, energy law, and renewable energy law, was present to engage in the discussions.
Keynote Speakers: The event featured prominent speakers, including:
- Nasri Sebayang – Discussed the potential of hydropower in Indonesia for meeting electricity needs and green hydrogen production
- Evy Haryadi – Presented insights on PLN’s RUPTL and its role in developing renewable energy towards achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060
- Eddie Widiono – Highlighted the significance of Distributed System Operators (DSOs) in energy transition
Workshop Highlights:
- Hydropower Potential and Development: Nasri Sebayang emphasized Indonesia’s substantial hydropower potential, citing that the country has an estimated 75.2 GW of hydropower capacity, not including mini-hydro projects. This potential is pivotal for the nation’s energy strategy, especially in producing green hydrogen through electrolysis processes that require a constant and significant energy supply
- PLN’s Green Transition: Evy Haryadi from PLN elaborated on the company’s commitment to achieving NZE by 2060. The presentation included strategies such as accelerating renewable energy development, utilizing hydrogen co-firing in gas plants, and implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. Haryadi stressed the importance of balancing reliable electricity supply, affordability, and environmental sustainability
- Role of DSOs in Energy Transition: Eddie Widiono discussed the transformation of DSOs as a result of the energy transition. He pointed out that DSOs are crucial for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid, ensuring efficient and reliable electricity distribution
The workshop facilitated interactive sessions where participants engaged with the speakers, discussing the challenges and opportunities in renewable energy utilization and smart grid implementation. The event concluded with a consensus on the need for collaborative efforts to enhance renewable energy integration and achieve Indonesia’s NZE goals.
The successful launch of Electricity CONNECT 2024 sets the stage for the main event scheduled for November 20-22, 2024. The insights and discussions from the workshop will contribute to the broader agenda of promoting renewable energy and smart grid technologies in Indonesia.
