We recently hosted a successful OMC Webinar, featuring our researcher, Orima Melati Davey, with facilitation by Christou Imanuel from Anggraeni & Partners’ Ocean Climate and Maritime Team. The event focused on Indonesia’s marine debris management under UNCLOS 1982. The session addressed Indonesia’s challenges as a major plastic polluter, discussing compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.
Key topics included the impact of marine debris, with 80% originating from land-based sources. The discussion covered Indonesia’s national and regional strategies for controlling marine pollution, focusing on the National Plan of Action on marine debris (NPOA 2018-2025). Practical community projects like Suroboyo Bus and Trash Bank were highlighted as examples of how international guidelines can be applied locally. The webinar also emphasized the importance of aligning sea and land regulations for effective debris management, incorporating modern approaches and traditional practices. The talk attracted 100 participants, reflecting strong interest in this critical issue.
Thank you to all who attended. Your involvement made this event a success. Stay tuned for our upcoming events, where we will continue addressing important marine and environmental law topics.
