Exploring the Future of Ship Recycling in Indonesia: Insights from “The Fundamental of Ship Recycling” Seminar

On January 14, 2025, in Jakarta, our team from Anggraeni and Partners participated in “The Fundamental of Ship Recycling” seminar. This event was pivotal for discussing the dynamic landscape of ship recycling in Indonesia. It provided a platform for enriching discussions with leading experts, including Dr. Capt. Miftakhul Hadi, whose insights are critical to understanding Indonesia’s sustainable maritime practices.

Agnes Wulandari and Alicia Daphnae, our associates and researchers from the Ocean Maritime and Climate Focus Group at Anggraeni and Partners, joined the seminar, bringing their expertise in maritime environmental issues. Their involvement underscored the importance of integrating environmental science with regulatory and operational strategies in ship recycling.

The seminar focused on the implications of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, which will become fully effective in June 2025. This international standard aims to mitigate risks to human health, safety, and the environment, ensuring that ships at the end of their operational lives are recycled responsibly.

As the Head of the Sub-Directorate of Ship Recycling at the Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Capt. Miftakhul Hadi discussed how the Indonesian government is updating its regulatory frameworks to meet international standards. He highlighted the upcoming regulations that require strict adherence to safety and environmental protocols.

Discussions also included dialogue with key private sector leaders, such as representatives from PT. Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia, who detailed the role of Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) in maintaining compliance with new regulations. .
