Staying informed about developments in maritime law and the blue economy is essential. Our Legal Lab Ocean Maritime Climate research associates, Orima Davey, Alicia Daphne, and Christou Siregar, attended the “Hukumonline Hang-out with Expert Series: Blue Economy: Business Opportunities, Legal Challenges, and Implications for the National Economy.” This event offered insights into the potential and challenges of the blue economy.
The event featured experts including Dr. Kristianto Pustaha Halomoan, S.H., M.H from Atmajaya Law School, Dr. M Achmad Santosa, S.H.,LL.M. CEO of Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative and Zaki Mubarok Ph.D who discussed the integration of sustainability and justice in Indonesia’s maritime sector. Indonesia, as a significant archipelago, faces unique opportunities and challenges in managing marine resources.
The discussions at the event emphasized the significance of sustainability in the blue economy, particularly in maintaining marine biodiversity and ensuring equitable resource distribution. During the sessions, experts addressed the evolving legal landscape, focusing on jurisdictional challenges and the implications of international agreements such as the BBNJ Treaty. Additionally, initiatives like quota-based fishing and efforts to reduce marine plastic debris were examined, providing valuable insights into the current legal and policy frameworks.
The Hukumonline Hang-out with Expert Series proved to be a valuable learning experience for our associates and the firm. It enhanced our understanding of the complex interactions between law, business, and ecology within the maritime sector. We eagerly anticipate the next event from Hukumonline to continue building on this foundation.
